July 1, 2018 – Bell Gardens (Calif.) – L.A. Wolves FC has earned a week off.

With an opening round playoff bye hanging in the balance, L.A. Wolves FC defeated Valley United SC, 4-1, in the UPSL Pro Premier Western Conference SoCal Division regular season finale at John Anson Ford Park.

L.A. Wolves FC Head Coach Felipe Bernal said, “The team didn’t play with enough urgency early in the game but the three goals right before halftime changed everything.  We are pleased with the result and to have a bye for the opening round of the playoffs. It was a goal of ours and we achieved it, and now we have to do our best to get ready for our next opponent, and prepare for six more games this season.”

Adrian Becerra, Ruben Alvarez, Dabe Anyadike and Jonathan Martinez each scored for Wolves FC (9-1-3 overall), which will likely play a closed-door friendly next week in preparation for the SoCal Division semifinals. The club will host the winner between No. 4 La Maquina FC and No. 5 Sporting San Fernando, with the game site and time to be announced.

It’s the eighth consecutive season in which L.A. Wolves FC has qualified for the playoffs – a UPSL record.

L.A. Wolves FC President Yan Skwara said, “Not bad for a rebuilding year! We made a lot of changes throughout this season but it was a very good job that was done by the coaching staff to keep things moving in a positive direction, when at any point over the last month we’ve faced some serious adversity and could’ve let the season slip away. The players believe and I think we’re ready to shock some teams.”

Arriving with only 12 players and playing without defensive stalwart Mason Klerks (hamstring), L.A. Wolves FC’s buildup play suffered on Sunday night until late in the first half.

A long ball from center defender Carlos Torres broke Valley United SC’s backline and found the feet of speedy wing Adrian Becerra, who shrugged away a defender before tucking the ball inside the near post for a 1-0 lead in the 40th minute.

Barely three minutes later Wolves FC was attacking again – this time inside Valley United SC’s penalty area – when Justin Saul controlled the ball on the right side and passed it to the top of the box for Ruben Alvarez to score easily for a 2-0 lead.

Wolves FC pressed for more before halftime and quickly found a third goal as Dabe Anyadike headed home a chipped cross from Irvin Aguiniga for a 3-0 lead in the 45th minute.

A fourth goal, from substitute Jonathan Martinez in the 71st minute, sealed the victory for L.A. Wolves FC, winners of consecutive games for the first time since April.

Goalkeeper Larry Sanchez had six saves but a late goal from Valley United SC’s Sebastian Toro, kept him from his first shutout with Wolves FC.

L.A. Wolves FC’s next UPSL game will be in the Western Conference SoCal Division semifinals, scheduled for July 14-15. The SoCal Division final is scheduled for July 21-22.

The SoCal Division champion will play the NorCal Division champion on July 28 or 29 to determine the Western Conference representative at the UPSL 2018 Spring Championships in Colorado, Aug. 10-12.
